Everything you want from your vacation is all right here on Florida's Southwest Coast.
Along Florida's Southwest Coast are the tropical barrier islands of Sanibel and Captiva and some of the finest, award winning beaches in America. Ideally located to many of Florida's great attractions, vacationers and island residents come from all over the world, providing the region with an international flavor.
Tourism officials call the Lee Island Coast (The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel) area "Florida’s Tropical Island Getaway," and it’s easy to see why. Many parts of this coastal region remind visitors of the days of a different Florida, when most of the state featured unspoiled white sand beaches, exotic wildlife, and lush subtropical foliage. It’s still like that in much of this fascinating area.
The Lee Island Coast is made up of distinct areas, each with its own unique character. Best known is Sanibel Island connected to the mainland by an alluring 3-mile-long causeway. To Sanibel’s north, Captiva Island is reached by another, much shorter, bridge. Sanibel is known worldwide for its shelling and the associated position referred to as the "Sanibel Stoop." Sanibel Island also features the J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to many exotic species of birds and plants.
Off the coast of these main islands, hundreds of other small islands attract boaters and nature lovers, making it easy to see how the area got its name. Exploration possibilities include North Captiva, Cayo Costa Island Preserve, Cabbage Key, Pine Island, and Boca Grande. Back on the mainland, another island draws visitors to the island-laced coast.
Estero Island is the home of Fort Myers beach. This area is popular for families, boating, and fishing as well as picnics or longer visits to Lovers Key, often listed as one of Florida’s top beaches by various travel shows.
Anyone suffering from island fever can find instant relief by paying a call to town. Fort Myers, called "City of Palms," is a growing hub of history and activity. Inventor Thomas Edison and his friend, automobile magnate Henry Ford, decided to make their winter homes in Fort Myers. Today, visitors can tour their estates and Edison’s laboratory and museum.
Baseball enthusiasts can catch the spring training games of the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins.
Come experience the warm magnificence of Gulf sunsets, top rated beaches, diverse recreational activities, fresh seafood and great shopping. It's like a little piece of heaven. Relax, you're in paradise!
